Every year in the U.S., many Italian people celebrate the Feast of the seven Fishes on Christmas Eve. It is unclear of when this dish became so popular, and it is considered to be one of the most celebrated Italian traditions. Usually families gather around the table and feast on about 2 types of fish prepared in 7 different ways. Even though this is a well known tradition there are many Americans that still have no clue what this tradition is.
This ancient tradition of eating fish on Christmas Eve. dated back from the Roman Catholic custom of not eaten meat and dairy on any eve. of holidays, mainly Christmas. The number 7 comes from the Bible because it is repeated more than seven hundred times in the Bible. The number seven also reflects the seven sacraments, the days of creation, the deadly sins. Also, the seven courses.
This tradition is celebrated in many different ways in my family. I usually use whatever fishes I'm in the mood for, or what my family enjoys. I did not start this tradition until I met my husband ten years ago. This tradition can be very expensive depending on the fish you choose.
